Upload Photos From C Drive to Instagram Using Bluestacks

Instagram LogoOne of my tech pet peeves is the assumption by a lot of app developers that computers are obsolete and everybody wants to do everything on their mobile devices.

Ummm… no.

I Live on my laptop and it drives me crazy when I have to haul out my phone or tablet to practise something. It specially bugs me that Instagram has such a poor web interface because it is one of the near used social media platforms today. While y'all tin view, like, and comment on posts from the people you follow, yous can't really upload whatever of your own content.

In that location are lots of reasons why people might want to share images from their computer instead of a mobile device:

  • They like to take photos and images from an actual camera or camcorder
  • They want to exercise some extra processing on their content beyond what'southward available on their phones/tablets
  • They have a library of existing images on their computers already they desire to share
  • They take an older phone, a not-smartphone, or no cellphone at all (really, it happens!)

When I offset wrote most this post almost how to upload images to Instagram from a PC back in Dec 2015, I didn't realize how many people were looking for that functionality. However, the postal service very quickly got a lot of traffic and it has been in my acme x near visited posts since then.

I've updated the post a couple of times since and so to note changes that have happened to the solutions I had written about and to add a annotation nearly a new Instagram app for Windows ten PCs that does everything EXCEPT let you mail photos and videos to the service.

Withal, I merely discovered that Instagram made a alter a couple of months agone that pretty much makes all the other options obsolete for posting photos. What they did was add support to mail service content from a mobile browser, i.e. a browser app you lot have on your telephone or tablet. But this feature too lets you post from a browser on your figurer by using a feature that makes information technology think it'due south a mobile browser. Huzzah!

Note: This method does not let y'all upload videos or send direct letters.

Then far I've only tested it in Chrome, where information technology'southward super easy, and Firefox, where it's a little more complex. Considering anybody can get Chrome for complimentary, that'southward the pick I'thousand going to detail here, with links to some more info for Firefox. If anyone wants to confirm that this can be done in some other browser also, please share it in the comments below. Too, I'm keeping the older information in the post, after this new department, for people who want to post videos from their computers.

Posting photos to Instagram using Chrome

Go to instagram.com.

Press CTRL + SHIFT + I to open up the programmer tools frame.

You tin also do this from the Settings bill of fare past going to More Tools > Developer Tools.

Press CTRL + SHIFT + G, or click the Device icon (2d from the left on the Developers Toolbar).

This adds a pocket-size toolbar just below your chief browser toolbars that lets you cull a mobile device to simulate. Y'all tin likewise just keep it on Responsive.

NOTE: If you click the X on the Developer Tools frame, yous'll lose the device carte. However, you can click the three dots to open the settings and click Undock the frame, which opens it in a separate window. You can and so minimize that window to get it out of your fashion.

Yous now have the mobile browser interface with a normal Photographic camera push button that lets you upload images to Instagram. Note that yous don't accept scrollbars with this interface; instead you accept a circular dot that yous use to simulate borer and dragging on a touchscreen.

Note: If the buttons do not announced, click the Reload push button or re-enter the URL in the location bar and they should appear. Also, you may need to change the filter in the Scan dialog to All Files to select one to upload.

Notes:

  • Business accounts don't let yous add a filter to your image for some reason (you tin can in the app).
  • While the Edit office lets you switch from full image to cropped square, as well as rotate the image, I haven't been able to figure out how to resize the paradigm to crop it further.
  • In that location's no selection to edit the caption in this interface equally far as I can run across.

Posting photos to Instagram using Firefox

You tin can do the same thing in Firefox as in Chrome as long equally you have version 52 or college. Merely get to Tools > Web Programmer > Responsive Design Manner. However, in some cases you may not see the choice to change devices depending on whether y'all have Multiprocess Windows enabled or non. And even if you've never touched whatever setting re. Multiprocess Windows, it could have been disabled by an app. The article below provides step-by-footstep instructions for re-enabling it if necessary.

Bank check Firefox 48 has E10s Enabled/Disabled, if disabled here is how to Enable (Techdows, 08/02/xvi)

Note: The Firefox interface does apply scrollbars.

Boosted methods for posting photos and videos to Instagram from a estimator

NOTE: I'm posting representative screenshots for each of the options, just I'grand not writing out step-past-step directions as I observe all of them pretty easy to utilize.

UPDATE: In October 2016, Instagram added a version of its app to the Windows Shop to utilise on tablets. You can besides install it on Windows 10 computers, however you cannot utilize information technology to upload photos and videos to Instagram unless your PC has both a touchscreen and a backwards-facing camera. It does offer more Instagram options than the spider web-browser version, though, so information technology's probably even so worth downloading if you don't want to utilize any of the options below.

  • Gramblr
  • Bluestacks
  • Hootsuite
  • Instapic

Gramblr

Gramblr is a programme whose sole purpose is to upload content to Instagram from your computer. You lot can download Windows and Mac versions for free from the Gramblr website.

Things I like about Gramblr:

  • Yous'd be hard-pressed to find a more straightforward interface.
  • There's a lot of flexibility for cropping your image. Note that you take to click Relieve before you can movement to the next step.
  • There's a funky Motion feature on the Filters page that turns your withal image into a curt video by zooming in on it.
  • You tin can schedule uploads.
  • You can add together multiple accounts and switch between them really easily.

Things I don't like near Gramblr:

  • Having to use a carve up app to actually interact with Instagram isn't ideal.
  • Unlike the other ii programs, information technology's not integrated with your webcam and so no selfies! (Maybe I should move this to the Things I Like section…!)

BlueStacks

BlueStacks is an Android emulator, which means yous can add most Android apps to your computer (although they may not all work exactly the aforementioned as on your phone/tablet). Yous tin can download Windows and Mac versions for free from the BlueStacks website (ringlet to the lesser of the folio for the Download button).

Things I similar almost BlueStacks:

  • It creates a display that looks similar an Android telephone, and so y'all get a sense of what your pics will wait like for most people and you can interact with information technology exactly the same way y'all would on your mobile device.
  • You tin utilize it to apply all sorts of apps, not only Instagram.
  • You can map keyboard shortcuts to different commands, depending on the app you're using with it.

Things I don't similar about BlueStacks:

  • The phone-like display makes it hard to read the text.
  • In that location are a couple of disruptive things in the interface. For instance, I haven't quite figured out how the cropping works yet. Also, to upload files from your figurer, you have to go to the Gallery screen and then click on the give-and-take Gallery at the superlative and select Other from the dropdown menu.
  • I haven't been able to find a fashion to successfully upload videos. (How yous're supposed to do be able to practise it is shown beneath, just information technology doesn't work for me.

Annotation: This is the point where you only have the selection to upload images, not videos. Bluestacks has a support article that explains how you should be able to upload videos, but I have not withal been able to get it to work.

Here's the basic process: Open Bluestacks, become to Settings, and scroll downward to Import Windows Files. That will let y'all select a video to add together to your Bluestacks Gallery. Now when you go to Instagram, you'll be able to select the video to upload from the Gallery. Unfortunately, for me, when I go to the next screen where y'all can choose a filter or to trim the video and add together a cover image, Instagram closes on me.

Hootsuite

I've used Hootsuite for a long fourth dimension because it's a great tool for posting to all sorts of social media accounts, but for some reason I didn't realize for quite a while that you could actually use it with Instagram.

NOTE: You tin can connect up to 3 accounts (any combination) for free. If you lot desire to use it with more than than 3 accounts and gain additional features, you lot'll need to employ Hootsuite Pro.

Larn more almost Hootsuite in this T4L post. >>

However, the process for uploading to Instagram is non as straightforward as it is for other social networks. While y'all starting time the process on your PC by uploading your photo or video through Hootsuite, y'all then demand to become to a mobile device to complete the posting. Your device needs to have both the Hootsuite and Instagram apps on information technology. You lot can get full instructions, including a video demo, for the process on the Hootsuite website, but here are the basic steps:

  • Set your Instagram account as a social network in Hootsuite on your figurer.
  • Write your post in Hootsuite and add your image or video to the post.
  • Click the Ship Now push button (or schedule the post for later). Yous'll get a message that a notification has been sent to your mobile device.
  • On your phone or tablet, brand sure yous're logged into the Instagram business relationship y'all want to postal service to.
  • Open your Hootsuite app and get to the Notifications page from the hamburger carte at the top left. You'll see your post with a note to Publish it to Instagram.
  • Click the notification and then click Open in Instagram. You'll get a popup to remind you which account you're posting to.
  • Click the Yes link. The image/video will open in Instagram and you will continue to post information technology as if you uploaded it from your device.
  • When you get to the last screen where you can add a caption, it will be blank. What you wrote in Hootsuite is in your clipboard, yet, and then all you need to do is paste it into the box. Make any changes you'd like and click Share to postal service to Instagram.

Things I like almost Hootsuite:

  • The first part of the procedure on your reckoner is very easy.
  • When you write the text for the post, if you use blank lines they volition carry over to Instagram, different if you write the caption in Instagram itself.
  • Y'all can schedule posts for afterward.
  • You can manage your Instagram posts through the aforementioned interface as your other social networks.

Things I don't similar near Hootsuite:

  • You still need a mobile device to mail to Instagram, and so it's non a computer-only solution.

NOTE: Although the method seems rather convoluted, once you've done information technology in one case or twice, it's really pretty simple. So as long as y'all do accept a mobile device with Hootsuite and Instagram on it, this is a dainty way to get your files from your computer into Instagram and then take its full features available to y'all.

InstaPic

UPDATE: Since I start wrote this mail service, I can no longer utilise this app. When I try to log in, it gives me an error message that says, "Your version of Instagram is out of date. Please upgrade your app to log in to Instagram." I sent a note to the InstaPic developers asking for help but never received a reply. I'm leaving up the instructions in case the trouble has something to do with my specific setup, although I have seen comments from other people on the app page that are having the same problem. If I larn whatsoever more I'll update the mail.

InstaPic is an app for the Windows eight and x operating systems. You can get it for free from the Windows Shop.

Things I like about InstaPic:

  • It provides most of the functionality of Instagram, including the power to follow people and manage some Instagram settings, in a Windows interface.
  • You can use information technology with multiple accounts and switch betwixt them really hands.

Things I don't like about InstaPic:

  • Even though Instagram now lets you mail service non-square images, InstaPic currently forces yous to crop them to a square format.
  • You can't resize the Explanation box to run into your full text. Even worse, you can't employ carriage returns.
  • Yous can't edit posts after you've uploaded them (or at least I can't find any way to practise and so).
  • There seems to be a bug when you're searching for pictures past hashtag. Fifty-fifty though a list comes up that shows you related tags with a number of posts tagged with them, when I click on any of them I go a bulletin that says "No posts yet." I've really sent a bulletin to the app developers to see if I'm doing something wrong and I will update this post if I go an answer.
